An Imaginary Country holds some of Hecker's most dense and climatic emotional pieces. Tracks like Borderlands, 200 Years Ago, and Where Shadows Make Shadows are some of his best recordings.
For me, there is little by way of emotional engagement here to sustain any proplonged interest in the material, much of which hardly ever varies. It's the droning and repetitive nature of the music and its allusions to romanticism, that renders it a meandering and monotonous experience.
