The Calling is Mary Chapin Carpenter's ninth studio album, and her first for Zoe Records, a Rounder Records imprint.

Carpenter still shows grace and craft on an independent label, but her performances are terribly restrained by Matt Rollings' production. It is simple and straightforward but it does not support Carpenter's vocals or give her material the edge is desperately needs here.

The Calling attempts to recreate the bold highs of Time*Sex*Love* and the tender moments of Between Here and Gone. It comes closer to the latter than the former, with some decent mellow tracks but mostly forgettable harder-edge songs.

Twilight is simple on the surface but it's truly a brilliant ballad. It Must Have Happened rocks like Fleetwood Mac. Why Shouldn't We captivated filmmaker Michael Moore to the degree where he was compelled to sing the chorus in a TV interview with Stephen Colbert.

It is clear that Carpenter remains committed to her music and can write solid songs that still deliver. There are several gems here that each have their own merit, though again, they suffer from the production. Hopefully her next set has dynamic production and more focus on melodies that can really highlight Carpenter again.

Average.
