Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Dave Matthews Band surprisingly is still churning out decent music late in their career. It isn't earth shattering in its execution.
If you love or like this band like me you will be impressed with how long they have been doing it. But it all sounds like you would expect from them and it isn't going to convert non fans.
Its a pleasant respectable release.
Everything they made other than Stand Up is better than this however.
Stand Up is really their only bad album.
This was a pleasant surprise for me. As a long-time DMB fan, it almost goes without saying that the "Big Three" (UTAD, Crash, and BTCS) are the classics. But to me, this one is tied with Busted Stuff for their fourth best. A very consistent album with no weak tracks, and some great ones (Broken Things, The Riff, If Only, Drunken Soldier).
