Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.9/100, a mean average of 70.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.6.

Still getting into R&B as a genre myself so I can't make any pronouncements about greatness, but wow this album is fantastic. The final track had me in tears. Vandross' voice here is just incredible and the arrangements behind him keep the album exciting no matter the mood. A real must-listen.

Funky, compact, and, just when you think it's over, the Slow Jamz sample.

Best R&B LP of 1981, no?

I go through stages of being absolutely obsessed with this album. Currently in the middle of one of those stages. Marcus Miller's bass playing here is absolutely heavenly. The string and keyboard arrangements are so tight, acting as the perfect counterpoint to that slippery bass, whilst Vandross' lead and backing vocal arrangements are wonderfully unpredictable throughout, constantly twisting and turning over and through the tracks, never settling for the obvious. Then, of course, there's the strength of the songs, the immediacy of 'Never Too Much' or 'I've Been Working', the sheer beauty of 'You Stopped Loving Me' or 'A House Is Not A Home'. Pretty much the essential '80s R'n'B album. He would show flashes of this genius again, but never over the course of a whole album. As close to perfect as music gets.
