Albert Ayler, late in his tragically short but influential career, presents arguably the most direct expression of personal grief achieved in the "Free Jazz" movement of the 60s, making it more accessible to fresh ears than some of Ornette Coleman's more wiry material, for example. Ayler's gift with a bold, memorable tune with which to head and foot each excursion also helps make this considerably more direct than much of the oeuvre . The funereal may predominate this record (the influence of New Orleans funeral lines isn't disguised), but misery does not: fury and anguish are far too prevalent for that.
