Frontier Ruckus was the opening band at a concert I saw in Asheville some years ago. I can't remember who it was--maybe Clem Snide? or Langhorne Slim?--but in any case I remember liking their understated, somewhat nerdy and literary style. So I went to see them a second time, this time as headliners, in a small club in Atlanta (it might have been the Earl). A very intimate, lovely show, culminating in an encore for which the whole band came out onto the floor and played an unplugged set, surrounded by the small group of people in attendance. I went to the show and then flew to Denver the next morning, a somewhat fruitless and impulsive journey to meet a woman who, it turned out, never showed up for our meeting. But my memories of the Frontier Ruckus show, which consisted mostly of songs from this album, still recalls fond and warm memories for me. "Animals Need Animals"--well, the song title pretty much sums up the bare and somehow poignant honesty and vulnerability I was feeling at the time, and that I think has become a permanent characteristic of my personality.
