Maaaaaaan, real dope, on the real. For me, Hyperdub is the greatest dubstep label ever. Others can lay claim to the throne (Deep Medi, Tempa, DMZ, Tectonic, Hessle Audio, Apple Pips, the list goes on and on), but nobody has continued to push the envelope whilst remaining true to the cause like Kode9 has with his superlabel. Home - at one time or another - to Burial, Darkstar, Joker, The Bug, Ikonika and, more recently, Laurel Halo, Hyperdub has been at the forefront of putting progressive sounds onto dancefloors for close to a decade. This compilation, tracking their first five years, displays a brilliant cross-section of some of the label's greatest, and most varied, achievements. From the 8-bit dancehall of Zomby's 'Spliff Dub', to the sparse, percussion-driven wobbles of Mala's 'Level Nine', through to the soulful synth pop of 2000F & J Kamata's dancefloor-slaying 'You Don't Know What Love Is', 5 is a perfectly sequenced, all killer, no filler thrill-ride through some of the genre's most memorable hits.
