It certainly was notable at the time, and definitely has influenced hip-hop. Lil Wayne is very clever with his lyrics, and often gets away with lines that other rappers would look stupid spitting.
However, this is 100% an example of what happens when hype overshadows actual work. This isn't that good. There are too many songs on this album. Lil Wayne falls back on immature, misongynistic bullshit (but he's so provocative!) too often. The production isn't interesting - it's satisfactory club beats.
Maybe it's my own backlash against the hype... I wonder if this wasn't hyped, would I still have issues with it?
Shortlisted for album of the year at the 2009 Grammys. The winner was Raising Sand by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

I was kinda enjoying this for a while, but it's way too repetitive and long to want to revisit.
Lil Wayne is, on the most basic level, a good rapper who raps good. He has strong flows, great variety to his sound, an expressive voice, and creative punchlines, and C3 is the best example of his positive qualities in a studio album. Unfortunately it also has some filler and some outright stinkers, terrible punchline bars, the normal things that hold Lil Wayne albums back from being truly great. 3 Peat, Mr/Dr Carter, Tie My Hands are all great, I wish the album was more consistent.

Peak Lil' Wayne. I, like everyone, bumped this shit when it came out. It was a strange time for rap music. There are still some songs on here that hold up but most are better left to the past.
