Lil' Wayne is far too hated on by pretentious music elitists. His late thousands run was one of the best in music; he was releasing a new mixtape packed with hard-hitting rhymes and clever punchlines every month, and some of his work (such as Da Drought 3 and Tha Carter III) stands as some of the best in rap music, although the quality of his output has significantly dropped in the last half-decade. Just listen to him with an open mind and try to get something out of it because you'll be much happier if you're not shutting yourself out from quality music through elitism. His music makes you want to work hard to be the greatest, while making you laugh all the while.

I've tried to give Lil Wayne an honest assessment. I've listened to him a few times - wondering if I was missing something. I didn't want to judge him based on bias or the limited sample I'd heard, so I invested time to see if I had it wrong. Nope. Ov-er-ra-ted.
I'll give him credit - he has clever wordplay, definite swagger and for a while, was very productive.
However, his lyrics go beyond 'provocative' into childish. His voice doesn't grab - it's too produced. He relies way too much on an army of producers - sticking to key relationships would build a tone or theme to his albums.
Just because a guy tells you over and over that he's the greatest doesn't make it true. His early work, industry connections, guest rapping on other artist's songs and a bevy of mixtapes built up a hype that didn't deliver in results. (Edited)
