Taking more than a few cues from the likes of Chan Marshall, Joanna Newsom, and other pastoral indie folk singers of the new millenium, Thao Nguyen has successfully carved out a niche in the territory somewhere between indie, rock, pop, and emo. The twelve songs on We the Common are smart, sometimes piercingly self-aware meditations on the creative life, teasing out the tension between life and art, the individual and the community--and perhaps most of all, security and restlessness. An appropriate meditation for an artist who spent most of her twenties touring, and who spent some time trying to settle into something like an ordinary life, integrating herself into the community in San Francisco as an activist for prisoners' rights. The result is probably her best album to date.
