Not everything Christgau hates is bad, but nearly everything he loves at least has merit and "Funeral Dress" is no exception. At first glance it seems like a wimpy album, full of simple melodies and guy-girl duets. Do a little research on the band and find that with one exception the band is composed of old men, and it's even even harder to get excited by Wussy.
But if you just keep listening, eventually, it will click hard. Every song is an ear worm and that droney guitar starts to resemble The Velvet Underground more and more as you keep listening.
Way to underrated!
