Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.1/100, a mean average of 69.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.4.

Good 90s nostalgia. Plenty of power pop with a mix of grunge, soft rock and country rock thrown in. I agree with other comments on the best tracks (Promises Brocken; Bittersweet heart) but would add the countryish "to my own devices" to those picks. Soul Asylum clearly know their stuff and it's a good set of songs, it's just that they don't quite rival the best at each thing they try. It's still enjoyable but there are better places to start for 90s rock.

Good album. Best 10 songs average is 87,3/100 and the album can get good 85/100. Best song is "Promises broken" great, followed by "Bittersweetheart" very good. All other songs good or ok. Only "Caged Rat" is bad.
Genre: Alternative Rock, Power Pop

Soul Asylum loses momentum. This album lacks memorable melodies, and the lyrics sound cute at best, trite at worst. Still quite listenable, but pales in comparison to their earlier work.

From the opening lyrical salvo, "they say misery loves company. / we can start a company and make misery. / *frustrated incorporated*" on lead track "misery", you have a fair idea what awaits you. soul asylum, fresh off a hit single ("runaway train"), put out another alt-rock album with a lot of witty wordplay. Other favorite tracks are "promises broken", "bittersweetheart", "eyes of a child" (where a prostitute sees "some are like customers and some are like patience") and "string of pearls", which is loaded with fun lyrical twists. Following the pearls, we hear "And the sack breaks and out come / The Siamese Twins / Who grow up to become the first President / With two heads, are better than one" and "Now his wife took the train to her ex-lover's funeral / Who died in the bathroom, hit his head on a urinal / When they got together, the knowledge was carnal / And the widow was at the funeral and they had quite a cat fight. / And they fell into the hole where the casket was resting / And the preacher just left in the middle of the service / 'Cause death was one thing but women made him nervous". (It's tough to lift lyrics from the song without wanting to just quote the whole song.) Please avoid the one big, scream-fest lemon, "caged rat".
