Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. !!! really outdid themselves with this one. It rises up to become a great album and, in my opinion, their best. Enjoyable and danceable throughout, it never tries to be more than it is and it excels because of it.

It's unfortunate that they called this album their "thriller", declaring their latest album as not only their best but unequivocably the best album out there, as it's a very good album on its own without setting unrealistic expectations. For me, "myth takes" is their thriller. Their new one at least rises from "strange weather, isn't it?" to the challenge of being a career-defining work with one of their best tracks ever, "one girl / one boy", a beautiful, funky, harmonious pop love song. Elsewhere, only "californiyeah" (chorus reminds me of wang chung's "dance hall days") and "station (meet me at the)" achieve heights implied by the album title (outside of the cool cover photo). "myth takes" was the first dance-punk album i loved -- "thr!!!er" is a reminder of how good these guys can be, but doesn't consistently thrill as much as "myth takes" did for me. Regardless, !!! seem reinvigorated and newly-inspired on this album, and that means a lot for a band that's been around over a decade now..
