Five years passed after the release of the moderately successful A Place in the World and Mary Chapin Carpenter's seventh album on Columbia Records: Time* Sex* Love*
This one really blew me away. It is a true triumph in her career, and it's remarkable how much she matured from her heyday in the commercial country market. This record revisits the level of introspective lyrics on Stones in the World, but with a strong sense of melody that is on par with The Beatles (Simple Life) and the Beach Boys (Maybe World). Passion and energetic spirit fills this one to the brim. The strings on Slave to the Beauty recall the maturity and melodrama Carpenter first dabbled with on Goodbye Again on her second album. It's a real winner and a career highlight.
