Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.7/100, a mean average of 72.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.6.

So this album is a concept album, and the concept is actually pretty cool. The tracks are built around the idea of someone going deeper and deeper through the different depth zones of the ocean. From the surface to the deepest part of the ocean. As you get “deeper” into the ocean (or deeper into the album) the music gets darker, simulating the loss of light. The surface is lighter, but the deep, that’s where it gets dark, that’s where it gets heavy, and the ride down there is fantastic. Instrumentally, this album is fantastic, initially it was going to be released as an exclusively instrumental album, but later, The Ocean decided to add vocals, and I’m glad they did, the vocals really add some extra depth (no pun intended) to the album. Though, if you want to hear the instrumental version, they released that too. The album is fantastic, it’s really a ride you should take, one through the whole album.
