Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 9% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.9/100, a mean average of 74.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.5.

this album is magical on those long coldest nights of Winter. starting with "Cracking" "My heart is broken
It's worn out at the knees, Hearing muffled, seeing blind, Soon it will hit the deep freeze" continuing with "Freeze Tag" at the playground in the Wintertime, and the "Small Blue Thing" that is "cold against your skin". all the lyrics and music come through with clarity and detail like in "Undertow". "The Queen and the Soldier" has that timeless feel that few artists ever find.

The songs are melancholic except for the last "Neighbourhood Girls", which is a bit rock 'n roll, though the spoken singing or "folk-rap" reminds me of Voice of the Beehive. I think the other track with spoken singing, opening song "Cracking", is great, it has a wintery feel like "Freeze Tag" or "Small Blue Thing", which is also very good. It was the end of winter when I first heard this album and its mood often takes me back to then.

I love SV, she is a great representation of Joni Mitchell's style of music and singer-songwriting sisterhood.

Aunque es posible que el disco más popular de Suzanne Vega sea Solitude Standing, su disco homónimo de debut me parece el más logrado de su trayectoria.

Enduring and timeless, comfortably in my all time Album list. I still listen to it after all these years and still love it from beginning to end. The Queen And The Soldier is on the surface kinda sappy but somehow it just works. And yes as a hormonal teenager I had a crush on Suzanne for many years .

Her first album and cracking one too....of the others of hers i've listened to it's unrivalled as her best, possibly her simplest too, showing of the quality of her voice perfectly, a favourite of mine from early listening. Marlene On The Wall and Neighborhood Girls the best of a strong track-list.

I met Suzanne briefly when she came to play at Kent State. I was friends with her brother Tim. It was pretty exciting, even though there were radio transmissions coming through her equipment that she complained bitterly about. I would have forgotten all about this album without that experience. Every once in a while I check it out again. Not bad at all.

isn't she sweet? i really like her innocent singing and her pretty songs. ok, nothing earth shaking here - but a neat album anyway.
