This is certainly a better "album" for Coldplay, inasmuch as it works a relatively cohesive collection of songs that are meant to work with each other. Granted, this is not perfect by any stretch. Chris Martin is still one of the least impressive lyricists, but even the stripped back instrumentals can make up for a lot of that. Despite the change in production and style, this still sounds very much like a Coldplay album. It's accessible, it's inoffensive, and it's certainly not the worst thing anyone is going to hear. I doubt they'll ever reach the highs of A Rush of Blood to the Head, or even Viva La Vida, but this is still a very solid listen. (Edited)

How is this shit slipping into the top 10? This belongs in the 400s next to some boring popstar. I would like to call coldplay the james taylor of our generation. purposely being as contemporary as possible on this one. Not adventurous in the slightest. Parachutes is a great debut and a definite classic.

To those wondering why this album is so highly ranked: if you click 'Sort by: average rating' you will notice that (as of today) Ghost Stories is literally the lowest rated album of this year.

Poor effort by a band who at their height were capable of so much more.

Why is Coldplay widely considered so detestable? And do they really deserve to be? But here’s the thing: I always kind of liked them. I liked their melodies. I liked their ambition.

But bear with me. Coldplay is clearly doing something right.The problem is that they—and they alone among the most successful musical acts of the 2000s—look and feel like an elite alternative rock band. They write their own songs. They play their own instruments. They work with experimental producers (Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins).
The new album, played in full for the first time, struck me as one of the finest pop releases so far this year.
To be clear, I’m not arguing that everyone has to like Coldplay. Music is a primal, subjective thing, and if Ghost Stories doesn’t do it for you, that’s totally fine.
But this is a good music, pleasing mainstream and alternative music lovers.
