Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.4/100, a mean average of 69.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 69.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 19.0.

I still think it's decent, but this is a mistread, it feels disappointing coming from their other flawless work, on the otherhand it's still better than a lot of other stuff out there. It's just disappointing coming from the stand-point of their last album.

Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for a return to the Agalloch that threw me into a perceived sense of wonder? Do you realize how anticipated this was for me? Now don’t get me wrong, I think everything Agalloch has done is on a scale of wonder whether they are playing with full-on neofolk musings or going into their black metal roots, but it’s been awhile since I’ve felt something that Ashes or The Mantle gave—which was the ‘full’ sound of Agalloch and not one dependent sound over the other. The Serpent & The Sphere grasps their love for doom metal, black metal, post-rock, and neofolk all in one package which is exactly what I wanted. Whilst this isn’t as great as The Mantle (few things are) this is maybe the second or third best thing the band has ever made and you need to listen to it. Oh my god, this is wonderful.
