The title for this album is actually a fairly good summary of how I feel about it. While I greatly admire most of Andrew Bird's work, and while I especially appreciate what he does as a live performer and collaborator, this album is, well, really great, sort of. It's a record consisting entirely of Handsome Family covers, and as a general rule I think I'd rather hear Andrew Bird recording his own songs rather than his interpretation of other people's songs. Bird's performances draw out the genuine lyricism of the Handsome Family's songwriting, which is a real virtue of this album, particularly on "The Giant of Illinois." But in the end it just make me hope for his next collection of originals.
