Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 11% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.9/100, a mean average of 75.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.5.

Having not lived through the era, I can appreciate The Monkees for their music without them having to carry the baggage of being "inauthentic." If you can get past the fact that they don't write their own songs and only somewhat play their instruments (I very much can), I think it's hard to say this is anything but a great album. Nearly every song is both catchy and fun which is a product from using top notch songwriting talent. The Monkees are a highly underrated band and I especially enjoy the fact that the employ multiple lead vocalists to vary their sound. I've recommended this album to a lot of people who wanted to hate it only for them to leave pleasantly surprised (and chastened).

Nice easy-listening pop rock. Very much a product of the music landscape around them. It's not all that groundbreaking but there aren't any bad songs really.

Their most psychedelic record second only to Head. This group has taken a lot of heat because of their manufactured image. It's actually just fun pop music.

The Monkees most solid effort by virtue of being more of Mike Nesmith and less of everyone else, though still too much Davy Jones. Mike sings Salesman, Door Into Summer, Love Is Only Sleeping, What Am I Doin' Hanging 'Round?, and Don't Call On Me. Mickey Dolenz does well on Words, Pleasant Valley Sunday, and the Nesmith-written Daily Nightly. Jones sings the rest, though Tork recites the spoken-word Peter Percival and duets with Dolenz on Words.
