Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. This is when Aerosmith really started to slip.

Very good hard rock/blues rock album. Best 10 songs average is 91,2/100 and the album can get very good 90/100. It's the fourth-best Aerosmith album for me, shortly after predecessor "Nine lives". Best and full-scoring songs are "Jaded" and "Fly away from here". Closely followed by "Luv lies" 95/100 and next "Just push play" 90/100.

Meh... Not the comeback Aerosmith needed after Nine Lives. More of the same. I know it's been awhile and they're 100 years old, but to redeem themselves in 2012, they need a real dandy of an album.
