Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 23% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.9/100, a mean average of 73.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 73.9/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.6.

If you stumbled on this as a teenager, you will always have a soft spot for it, so many ear-catching melodies.

1977... The reason why I joined this site .I was looking for Ash's best albums when I just found this site. But that's another story. So talking about the album, seems to be made to be enjoyed in adolescence, the songs fit the early years of these people, the album can be defined in various ways, maybe punk maybe rock, it is the perfect mix of both."Kung Fu" with its lyrics that brings references to classical masters of the fight (Jackie Chan etc...)can fit like a punk, really fast, focused on reaching the chorus, and a simple progression that could have been made in the 70s. In the beginning you can bother a bit because the rapid change of progression in certain songs, but you will soon realize that these changes throws more wood on the fire of this album. It levitates between love songs and unhealthy (yeah.. I know that you were there) teen parties, without losing the consistency of a classic mixed album. "Darkside Lightside" along with kung fu is one of my favorite songs of this album and it is a piece of evidence that this band had the ability to play with the progressions and compositions, and make all of this still being Fast and lyrically intelligent for a teenager, It seems like they threw a lot of papers with progressions upward and clipped them blindly......actually not but this would be very great."Girl From Mars" is a song that takes out that punk atmosphere of the album, taking him to a more melodic and pop side, it's pretty cool when you is not claiming anything. The album also does not seem to want anything. The following songs prove that Ash wasn't a iron band and show some of their influences. It could be considered a classic if it was released in 1977. But actually "1977" only brought brightness and positivity for the year 1996.

What's this!? An upcoming band title their first official album '1977' in attempt to appear 'punk'? Dirty album cover which would better suit a Post-Nirvana grunge band in tow. You're looking at some posers right here. Then... BAM! 'Girl from Mars' one of the best singles ever. You don't see Swim Deep and Peace releasing anything that good. Right in the days of the britpop and common people, Ash were going to have to try hard to stand out. Okay, they were taken on by a big record company and okay... the songs were... handed around many films and computer games. Does it matter? Not really, the songs were awesome. I'm listening to 'Lose Control' and 'Kung Fu' no matter what. The singles are strongest here. If you want to see just how strong this group could be with singles check out 'Ash - A-Z Vol.1

I'm Not a great fan of pop-rock, but this album surprised me. I was looking for some new songs to listen (some stores still sells singles) when "Kung Fu" draw my attention, i asked what was the album of that song and my friend showed me "1977".
Great songs, amazing Progressions, and sometimes when you think that something is too classic, they surprise you bringing another progression totally different. Some Punk, Some rock. "1977" brought some shine in the of 1996.

Lose control is a fantastic! Brings back great(and frustrating...) memories of trying to get the A license on Gran Turismo.
