Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 68.8/100, a mean average of 65.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 65.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 22.1.

High summer, 1970, four of us in a non-air-conditioned apartment on the third floor overlooking Central Square, getting high. Radio news came on and delivered the bummer story of the day from Viet Nam, again-- and suddenly the room changed. Frank, mild mannered Frank, wouldn't say s++t if he'd a mouthful, reached his limit. He threw up the window sashes, hauled the speakers over to the windowsills, fired up the turntable and dropped the needle on "The War Is Over."

The square was full of foot traffic and it was almost like "Get Back;" only the Londoners all knew the Beatles when they heard them, and these people, most of them couldn't have told Phil Ochs from Neil Diamond. They were impacted only by the tune and the sentiments expressed-- but a spring came into every step in the crowd, people laughed and clapped and gave us thumbs ups and peace signs, and a breeze came up the street off the river to show God's approval of Frank's gesture, and for a few minutes the world was exactly what it should be...
