Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 79.4/100, a mean average of 78.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.7.

A good sounding and fun rap album for a change. Very good.

Plays more like a Q-Tip solo album, but the production is classic and Q-Tip sounds really great.
East coast hip-hop. Alternative rap like The Fugees, and jazz-rap like De La Soul. Inventive debut with some ear-catching and amusing tracks, such as the hit "Can I Kick It" with it's clever dancing around the bass line from Walk On The Wild Side, and the very playful and cheeky "Public Enemy".

There's plenty of good stuff here, but it's definitely not the more developed and nuanced mastery they would produce on the next two releases.
This record provides stretches that end up featuring a noticeable lack of Phife and ends up being a bit one sided in sound. Not inherently bad by any means as Q-Tip obviously carries a lot of weight without issue, but my favorite ATCQ material has a bit more interplay between the two incredible MC's playing off each other in a fashion that had to be inspiring in the writing and recording process.
Ultimately, this debut is VERY solid. Great bars and production for how early this came along, but it's an undercooked version of what was to come. The first four songs, Ham N Eggs, and Can I Kick It? are highlights.
this album sounds like 2019

A bit samey but still a nice chill out rap album. Good.
I bought People's Instictive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest on 28/12/1997 from Record & Tape Exchange on CD for £8.00 The version I have is on the record label Jive catalogue number 1331-2-J It entered the UK charts on 19/05/1990 and got to number 54 spending a total of 2 weeks on the chart.

Wildly inventive, refreshingly intelligent and such a joyous flow.
unfocused debut, but still has that tribe vibe
