Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.6/100, a mean average of 82.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 82.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.0.

Sugar keeps its feet squarely in the foundation of hard bop, but does so with a modern soul jazz flavor. Personnel like Lonnie Liston Smith on electric piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar are just the right mix for this exposition. The title cut is a superb funkily swinging bit o' laid back fun with equal contribution from all members through its 10 minute running time (CD issues add a 14 minute live version that is even more fun). Of the three original cuts, the middle "Sunshine Alley," is easily the funkiest. Stanley drops his best solo, lyrical, engaging, and seriously jazzy, on the "Impressions." Like the live version of the title cut, "Gibraltar," (recorded in the same session as the earlier material but not released at the time) was an add on for the CD reissue, and a welcome one at that being some seriously groovy jazz where Benson really gets a chance to shine.
