Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 18% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 73.9/100, a mean average of 75.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 12.9.

Things I (thought I) knew about Donovan prior to listening to this album.
1) Poor man’s Dylan
2) Hippy

I went into this album more or less blind. In my life I think i may have heard 3 or 4 songs by Donovan. Hurdy gurdy man (obviously) and a few others. In fact, Catch the wind was the second song I learned how to play on the guitar years ago.

To say I was surprised by the quality of this album is an understatement, the first part especially. The album dips on the second part, in my opinion, but the first part makes up for it. The songs are simple and soothing with the hippie vibe to yet challenging at times, with hints of the psychedelic sound of the time. I am looking forward to exploring more of Donovan, poor man’s Dylan no more!

This is not a proper album! But the US release (I think) of the first ten songs from Donovan's double album A Gift From A Flower to a Garden back in 1967.

BUT, every song is folk rock perfection. AND. If this had been released on it's own instead of part of that semi-sprawling double album, I'm pretty positive it would be mentioned in the same breath as Love's Forever Changes or The Byrds' Mr. Tamborine Man. I'm not kidding. But it wasn't and so it isn't.

Anyways these ten songs zip by in a very playful, poppy and colorful way as you'd expect from Donovan, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to put a quick smile on their face.

Grade: Well it's absolutely essential 60s folk-rock especially if you like your folk-rock on the poppy side of life so it gets an A.
