Fantastic album! A mixture of Punk, Jazz, & Soul. You wouldn't think that would work, but it seriously does.
First and foremost, it's a stunning pop album. I find myself humming some of these songs as much as any. Also, the seamless melding of punk/new wave with soul is a great idea, and gives this album a certain class but also a certain snotiness. And that class and that snotiness work both with and against each other to create a really urgent album that is just so much cleverer than the music a lot of Dexy's peers were coming up with (honestly, I believe this album is tons smarter than The Specials' debut, which I guess is about the closest thing they had to a peer). I just love this album.
More people should know about this album. There's some great stuff on it. Dexys shouldn't just be known for Come on Eileen.
Favourite songs: Geno, Keep It, Seven Days Too Long
I prefer Too-Rye-Aye over this. This album has too much emphasis on the horns, and while Dexys has fantastic horn players, it's not where the emphasis should be.

Reminds me a lot of Orange Juice's "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever". Not too dissimilar: this is just on the post-punk side of things where that tends to lean on twee/indie pop more than this does. I like how they both combine post-punk with jazz, funk, soul, etc. It's real nice.
