Really good soul music, not a single bad track. Entire album flows really nicely and doesn't have any filler whatsoever.
Standout tracks: "Burn It Down,"Tell Me When My Light Turns Green,"Geno," "Keep It"

Amazing that a band that most Americans would think of as a one-hit wonder would have three albums in the 1,001 Albums book. Having listened to this album, I'm not entirely sure why.

More people should know about this album. There's some great stuff on it. Dexys shouldn't just be known for Come on Eileen.
Favourite songs: Geno, Keep It, Seven Days Too Long

Excellent soul album with hints of pop, jazz, and folk. Excellent songs, obviously, Geno, is a standout, but there is plenty of good songs here. Kevin Rowland is a brilliant songwriter but he never wrote that much and that's probably why he is underrated. Still, this is a fine debut record from a great artist.

Excellent blend of ska, punk, & a hint of Orleans style Jazz. Makes me feel like an angsty 80s high schooler.

Reminds me a lot of Orange Juice's "You Can't Hide Your Love Forever". Not too dissimilar: this is just on the post-punk side of things where that tends to lean on twee/indie pop more than this does. I like how they both combine post-punk with jazz, funk, soul, etc. It's real nice.

Great record! Anthemic and swaggering, intense and passionate , authentic and sincere. Sounds like nothing else before or since in British music and Kevin Rowland sounds like he's singing for his life! This album meant so much to us back in 1980.

Well the horns are exactly where the emphasis should be IMO. On the follow-up, strings take a much more important place, and I think it fits them less. Stunning record, anyway.
