Both times I've seen Elephant Revival play live were during tours supporting this album. Their performances are especially enjoyable when they're performing for a hometown crowd, as they often sing about places and experiences that feel native to their home in Boulder County, Colorado. The line, "Does a flower question love?" from the lovely "Birds and Stars" makes me think immediately of a particular wildflower meadow in the Indian Peaks Wilderness that rises above their hometown of Nederland--the way the columbines and elephant flowers there yearn toward the 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks that tower beyond them. It's a perfect song about a kind of perfect longing inspired by a spectacular landscape, all set to subtle melodies on quiet guitar and impish banjo.
