Elephant Revival's self-titled debut is immediately likeable, characterized by mountain gypsy melodies over progressive bluegrass instrumentation. Bonnie Paine sings like a siren, a silvery voice drawn from a depth of feeling that can only be described as mythical. Natalie Merchant is an obvious reference point, but Elephant Revival seem to be channeling something far more elemental, something flowing straight out of the Indian Peaks that rise above their Nederland, Colorado, home. "Ring Around the Moon" feels like a spell cast against cynicism: "Flying machine rises / Sends a light down to scan the surface / Searches narrow / Like the minds of the suspicious / How I wish that we would trust us."
