Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 79.7/100, a mean average of 77.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.8.

A good collection of performances, but it didn't feel as important as I expected.

This falls under "historical relevancy" rather than most enjoyable listen today. I doubt very many people listen to this that often and would prefer listening to this rather than dozens and dozens of other albums ranked lower in the list. This includes the rolling stone critics that ranked this so high.

The start of it all. It does sound all a bit tame by today's standards, but they are probably the most important recordings in the history of rock. As Lennon said, 'no Elvis, no Beatles'. Fine performances, Elvis would never be this raw again. Mystery train, is the highlight.

I prefer the newer sleeve of the DLP edition, the huge portrait of Elvis, handcoloured, delivers an idea of Elvis before ELVIS. What we listen to seems like an accidental development, fractures of what was freely flowing in the (studio) air created a random formation. To the listener it appeared as a new form of beauty, a whole new culture, I guess. It surely opened the doors to the "Elvis the pelvis" we see on the original sleeve. But the magic of the moment is captured in those hedonistic but yet insecure early portraits of the later issue.

Considered by many to be the first sip from the primordial soup that is Rock N' Roll. The Sun Sessions is the first official recording of Elvis Presley.

I think that I would put "Mystery Train" in the all time top 25 singles.

The bing-bang of a way of life, think, be. An incomparable sound and a marvellous simplicity by a magician, Sam Philips. One exceptional voice absorbed by blues, country, for make something completely fresh, new, unrepeatable.

Elvis is always Elvis, sure a lot of it sounds pretty dated, but he had a great voice and certainly could rock. Even though he got more interesting after the BBC Comeback Special, this is the cradle of rock n' roll, and The Sun Sessions is a better starting point than the self-titled full length album.
