Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 3% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 80.3/100, a mean average of 79.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 80.7/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 16.8.

One of the best bands of the 90's. Layne Staley is an amazing vocalist
This comment is beneath your viewing threshold.
In my opininon the best grunge band after Nirvana. They had this unique dual-vocals with Layne / Jerry that was incredibly effective, as well as Cantrell's deep and soulful guitar sound. Soundgarden was also a really good band but I think Alice in Chains's sound was even more focused and fascinating.
Layne Staley is one of the greatest sings of all time. Didn't think they could replace him, and they didn't, but DuVall still makes them a good solid band. It's very sad that the classic lineup couldn't have done more.
I never thought I would like them post-Layne Staley. I saw them perform with William Duvall before they had new material and was impressed with his chops. Their new stuff far exceeded my expectations, they are still doing it.
Man in the Box is not about slamming Jesus. But even if it was, it doesn't change my opinion of Alice in Chains. A decent band that captured the darkness of addiction better than most. Too bad those addictions ruined the band.
Because of a line in their song Man in the Box, I won't support AiC by buying any of their albums. But they're still a great metal band! A little bit of grunge, with a little bit of metal, with a lot of darkness.
Part of the soundtrack of my youth, ... and for their latest album: "I Like" check my brain. They are still able.
My favourite grunge band of all time. Even when they were completely messed up on drugs, they were capable of making consistent great albums. I simply can't get enough of Layne Staley's sick vibrato, their dark vocal harmonies and their kick-ass metal-influenced instrumentation. When I feel low, like completely-at-the-bottom-low, I do it in company with Alice in Chains!
One of the better grunge bands. Obviously they don't get as much hype from this website as Nirvana or Pearl Jam. It's too bad too. Alice in chains are loads better.
