One of the most unique artists of all time.
Age has made me lazy. With TV shows, Zombies and Dragons have become my intellectual limit. With music, it is nearly, but not quite as bad. I don’t like being made to work hard while listening to music anymore. Normally I would quickly pass over the likes of Beefheart; because I don’t want to put the work in. But here i have, and props where it is due. These guys could play and Beefheart was clever. Trout Mask is a hard listen, but the thought that went in to it is evident. Safe as Milk is more my bag and is a fantastic album. When one of his tracks find me, often it is a live track, and what a brilliant live act. I rarely find myself not chillin’. A great talent who made the musical world a more interesting place. Has to be close to top marks.

Just sound like a genius, sometimes I wonder why I love it so much, but then it just sweeps you up again

To any music lover: get Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off Baby, Doc At The Radar Station and Safe As Milk immediately. Get Mirror Man, Shiney Beast, Clear Spot and Ice Cream For Crow years later when you've listened to all the previous albums hundreds of times. This guy, like Mingus, has produced a very huge amount of superb music.

I see the genius, and I know how influential and trailblazing they were. Captain Beefheart explored avenues that no other band had approached. Several albums are indeed classics. If you can imagine, despite all this, he may be overrated. I find many in music circles speak highly of Captain Beefheart because they feel they should. If I had a dime for every hack who thought name-dropping Trout Mask Replica made him a bohemian music hipster... It's OK to be unfamiliar with his work. It's OK to 'not get it'. It doesn't make you a chump.
