To any music lover: get Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off Baby, Doc At The Radar Station and Safe As Milk immediately. Get Mirror Man, Shiney Beast, Clear Spot and Ice Cream For Crow years later when you've listened to all the previous albums hundreds of times. This guy, like Mingus, has produced a very huge amount of superb music.

I see the genius, and I know how influential and trailblazing they were. Captain Beefheart explored avenues that no other band had approached. Several albums are indeed classics. If you can imagine, despite all this, he may be overrated. I find many in music circles speak highly of Captain Beefheart because they feel they should. If I had a dime for every hack who thought name-dropping Trout Mask Replica made him a bohemian music hipster... It's OK to be unfamiliar with his work. It's OK to 'not get it'. It doesn't make you a chump.
If you don't find his music trying, I'd be impressed. If you don't find it rewarding, I'd be surprised.
