Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 80.4/100, a mean average of 75.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 11.3.

good observation...yeah i do rely on pitchfork as a source of new music. i cant really think of a better one, other than this site to be honest. the radio just plain sucks, my friends taste in music range from tolerable to unbearable, and i just dont have time to go to many shows anymore. but i never let a bad rating keep me from listening to a band in order to form my own opinion. and from the looks of your chart and your knowledge of who gets the thumbs up from pitchfork, id say you were a reader as well. with the exception of kings of leon and cold war kids, most of your 2000 selections get top marks from pf. cold war kids i like, just not enough to put on a chart...kings of leons early stuff was pretty good but their most recent album is just horrendous. if i have to hear "sex on fire" one more time someone is going to get hurt. love the black keys though. if you havent already you should check them out live. in regards to genres, ive always favored alternative/indie/pop to hip-hop or electronica. i do enjoy these other genres but few artists in them give me the feeling a well constructed pop song does. and yeah, nothing in 2009 simply because this starving college student hasnt had the money to buy anything new!

Thanks ! You have some cool picks here, though I must confess not being a Dylan fan as of yet. Great song-writer, just not my cup of tea. I started off pretty much with your albums : Arcade Fire, The Shins, Beck... (and stumbling across classic chamber pop albums) before moving on to post-punk territory and krautrock.

I own 10 of your top 50 tho I think only a couple are in my top 50. Yours is a fun list for the most part. I am older than you so my list includes music I have listened to since the day they were released. That's a long time to still include them in your top 50 list. Longevity counts for something.

much better.. some great choices.. have you heard mellow gold, odelay and guero by beck though? i much prefer them to sea change and modern guilt, which i find really insipid

well, i take your point regarding soundtracks and greatest hits not necessarily constituting cohesive works of art as such.. they are technically long playing albums too though and if i'm compiling an honest list of the lp's i prefer, i would have to include several soundtracks and 'best of' collections.. i have a strong perfectionist streak and am notoriously hard to please, so i'm not really willing to 'tolerate' tracks i find uninspiring for the sake of those that i love.. i might do it your way in the future soon though, just to give myself an idea of my own tastes!
