Top 9 Music Albums of 1991 by zdwyatt

This chart only includes albums that have four or more stars. My ratings begin as an average of the ratings of the songs, out of a possible 100. I may adjust the album's star rating based on the album's personal significance, historical importance, or pure nostalgia. I list both ratings in my review.

It's so hard to evaluate this album fairly. I was at exactly the right age for this release to blow my mind. And when I put it on today, I still love it, from start to finish. Is it overrated in some objective sense? It might be. But I can't say for sure because I never get tired of it.

The genius of this album is in the combination of the McCready/Gossard musical style with Vedder's lyrics. The former mostly riff off blues-rock players like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix, which gives the music a sort of groove. And then Vedder overlays fairly dark and serious lyrics. I don't know that either would have had as much success without finding the other. But they did and it's awesome.

Even though I later came to love the more complicated and lengthy structures of their earlier work, this one remains a standout for how heavy the sound is. [First added to this chart: 01/13/2015]

Even though the singles were pervasive back in the day, I've only lately listened to the whole album. I was pleasantly surprised by how strong the collection is.

I was always confused by the Use Your Illusion albums. Like many people, I'd have preferred they pared down the Use Your Illusion albums into one awesome album. But, as a standalone record, this one is by far the stronger of the two.

This was the beginning of the end of U2 for me. After the stellar Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum, this was something of a disappointment. It does have some great tracks and is solid overall. But it just doesn't reach the highs of the albums that preceded it.

This one isn't as strong as II, but does have a handful of good tunes. Even allowing for the rock star hubris that produced two albums of material, I don't get why they sequenced the albums the way they did. This one feels like it has more filler than not, and it's much weaker for it.

Shoegaze isn't really my thing but I certainly see the appeal of this album. There's so many layers to it that it's almost suffocating (in a good way). There aren't any real standout tracks, but the overall effect is pleasant.
