When i was a kid circa 1983, my parents bought me a cassette for christmas or my birthday. A Steppenwolf greatest hits, maybe not this one, was it. All i remember is that "magic carpet ride", the only song i knew on it, was on the hits album.

The fun thing with cassettes is, if you just put a piece of scotch tape over the indented "tab" on the top (there were 2, one for each side), then you could record over what was already on the cassette. That's what i did, probably recording songs on the radio over it.

This was the first album i bought for myself. I loved what i saw (via mtv and friday night videos) and heard from Purple Rain and bought the album near the end of 1984. [First added to this chart: 05/18/2017]

I grew up pop, r&b, country and rock but started to like hair metal around this time. This was the first hair metal album i bought (this) or had copied. I bought purple rain & the ratt cassette around the same time and i remember my dumb@ss stepdad not knowing anything about either and combining them calling them "prince rat". After their two big hits came out, i had to have this album. I think this was my first purchase from Camelot music in ?Stevens Point?, Wisconsin. (Either that or the Rapids.) [First added to this chart: 05/18/2017]

At this point, i was able to go to Camelot music (a different town) a couple times a year -- around my birthday (April) and around Christmas. Around my birthday in 1985, i bought this album... [First added to this chart: 05/18/2017]

Great idea and really interesting comments. I'd try this myself but I bought my 1st album in 1967. I remember what that was but after that it's a blur. You've inspected me to maybe give it a go though
