It was a simple cause-and-efect relation that, after the out-of-this-world music themes and absolutely emotional lyricism of Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson had a psychological breakdown. Imagine what could have been if SMiLE were finished and released at that time? There would be nothing left to be done with music as the universe would probably have collapsed with such perfection.

Maybe it's my weakness for suicide stories, but there's something in these tense chords, these visceral, soulful lyrics and this whispered (or howling), weeping (or laughing) voice of Violeta Parra that reaches to the depths of my Latin American -- but most of all human -- condition. Be it Violeta, the singer-songwriter, or Violeta, the local culture promoter, or even Violeta, the communist militant, every aspect of this woman seems to fascinate me a bit more every time I come back to her life and work. The tale of the Chilean savant and her hearty songs is, to me, one of those that sum up all that's beautiful, sad and admirable in this world.

The hippie movement carried its imminent destruction in its very seed and the ultimate proof is 13th Floors' debut. One can't deny its measureless influence on the sound that would come to be characteristic of the 60s, thoroughly copied from the cover art to the use of the word "psychedelic" to describe music.
Well, there's something in this album... it could be Roky Erickson's screamed vocals, it could be the lo-fi tone or maybe only that revolted aggressiveness, there's this something that would be ignored for a feel years but would be rediscovered by the likes of Spacemen 3, Primal Scream, Butthole Suffers and The Jesus and Mary Chain: it is punk rock. Yeah, bad news for your boring hippie-ish uncle -- psych rock generated punk. [First added to this chart: 10/13/2015]
