Top 40 Greatest Music Albums
by b00st
This is my list of 40 favourite albums of all time. It is in other words a list with the 40 albums I like listening to the most. To me a truly great album must challenge the listener in some way, be full of surprises, yet be beautiful.
I abide by the "one album per artist-rule", although I try to comment if there's anything else worth checking out by that artist. And no 2011 in the list yet.

Top 40 Greatest Music Albums ratings
Average Rating = (n ÷ (n + m)) × av + (m ÷ (n + m)) × AVwhere:
av = trimmed mean average rating an item has currently received.
n = number of ratings an item has currently received.
m = minimum number of ratings required for an item to appear in a 'top-rated' chart (currently 10).
AV = the site mean average rating.

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 81.9/100, a mean average of 79.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.1.

oh yeah...dirty projectors too!
Let's see...I don't know some of the albums on your chart, dislike a few others, but the ones I love overshadow everything else. Props for Cult of Luna, Pain of Salvation, Tool, King Crimson, and especially, Talk Talk and Katatonia. Very nice!
definite props for katatonia, gorgoroth, and mastodon! very nice list.
Man I could not get off Themata, only recently properly giving sound awake a go haha.. but it is incredible def a step up...
Will have to check out other stuff on your chart, any of it like Vool and DLC?
yeah the almost! very nice
I've checked out most of your list, and I really liked it,but I disagree with you on some of your choices, specially "Sound Awake".It lacks creativity and ambition(in comparison with Porcupine Tree).
Right! I'm revisiting your chart as promised. Partly due to your awesome choices and partly due to Mr 'buttfuck' Leonar, I'm raising your rating, buddy. You not a fan of Undertow and Frances the Mute?
Cardigans, Coldplay, F-Mac along Gorgoroth, Opeth??
Thrilled to see Blank Planet, but I'm still unfamiliar with some of your choices,so I like to check them out before rating.
Seiously killer chart. Thanks for sharing. Gonna take a slightly different approach and give you a high rating based on albums I have listened to. If after listening to those I don't know there are some I don't like, I'll revisit and lower your rating. Happy with that?
