Top 40 Greatest Music Albums
by b00st

This is my list of 40 favourite albums of all time. It is in other words a list with the 40 albums I like listening to the most. To me a truly great album must challenge the listener in some way, be full of surprises, yet be beautiful.
I abide by the "one album per artist-rule", although I try to comment if there's anything else worth checking out by that artist. And no 2011 in the list yet.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 81.9/100, a mean average of 79.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.1.

Let's see...I don't know some of the albums on your chart, dislike a few others, but the ones I love overshadow everything else. Props for Cult of Luna, Pain of Salvation, Tool, King Crimson, and especially, Talk Talk and Katatonia. Very nice!

Zoso, I agree. Themata is great, but Sound awake is a step up. Can't wait to hear what the third one sounds like. As for my chart I recommend you listen to the top 10 first, 'cause I think all of my choices there reflects the same kind of progressive sense and nice melodies/harmonies that got me into those aussie-bands - even if they don't really sound anything like them. :)

Cool, but perhaps you should give Sound Awake another listen? It doesn't stick right away, it kind of grows on you, and if it's one thing it does not lack - in my opinion - it's creativity and ambition. :)

I've checked out most of your list, and I really liked it,but I disagree with you on some of your choices, specially "Sound Awake".It lacks creativity and ambition(in comparison with Porcupine Tree).

Thank you, mate! I love Undertow, but I don't think it's as good as their three later albums, all of which I have something even stronger than love for. :) And with Frances the mute I must admit that I may need to give it a few more listens.
