Michael Stephen Portnoy. One of the most important players to ever impact my drumming. His musicality, control of odd time, creativity, and powerful groove have helped me to shape my own drumming for over half a decade.
Mike's influence on me stems far beyond his drumming. His intellect fascinates me. Mike and I have a similar brain. We're both very analytical, detail oriented people who have a definitive direction for their music or otherwise. A lot of that comes from listening to the music of Dream Theater and studying Mike 's drumming and his decision making as a band leader, producer, set list creator, music collector, etc...
As for the music he has created since the late 80's, much of it has a special place in my heart and collection. You can find his drumming from multiple albums spread across my Main Chart on this site, however, with this chart, I'm taking it a step further. This chart will feature my favorite albums featuring Mike on drums.
There will be a lot of Dream Theater albums here that you've probably heard/of, but I encourage you...no no.. implore you to check out his side projects and post-DT material. SO much good stuff. Mike has been out of Dream Theater for more than 7 years and they are no longer the same band.. Holy shit, I still remember reading that news....
