Led Zeppelin Albums Ranked
by PaperVinnie
My #1 favorite band. My top 3 is still fairly fluid for Zeppelin but the general ordering seems like it'll be like this for a while.

For me, this album is where Zeppelin hit their stride. Rob's voice was still hanging on, and the band was riding high in their artistic peak. There's lots of diversity and it flows together perfectly.

This album was recorded as Plant enters his prime and it shows. He came out of his shell as a songwriter and also finally gained control over his massive range and tone. Favoring folk over rock for half the album has long divided people, but I think this record is one of their most cohesive and brilliant sounding ones.

The band's debut was modeled after their live set from their first tour in September 1968. It's mostly covers with a few original tunes. For this reason it's generally ranked low among Zepp-heads, but I've always thought this was one of their more exciting records. Perfectly blends the emerging hard rock trends of the time while having the shadows of psychedelic, folk, and the loud blues presence.

Their biggest album with some of their biggest songs. This LP definitely has a certain vibe to it that can't be applied to any of their other LPs, but it's stacked against some more cohesive records in my opinion.

Led Zeppelin's Exile, White Album, whatever you wanna call it, it's an epic trip. The band does their best to sum up their whole career while wielding a new power and style their previous records haven't seen yet. There's a certain lack of cohesion that prevents me from ranking it higher, but it's still among my favorite albums ever.

This was the first full album that really had me sold on Zeppelin. It's all here, the band's iconic sound had arrived, Robert's vocals still had their full force, and the tunes cranked out here easily rank among their most plays radio tracks. For me, the second side can drag a bit (Living Loving Maid is a bit meh to me, and studio Moby Dick has me jonesing for some of his better live solos), and as such I can't put it in my top 5 these days.

I used to think this album was pretty dreadful, but I've gotta admit, I really misjudged this one. Considering the state of the band at the time this LP was recorded, I think it stands as very impressive for the time. The band could hardly get Robert to do anything Zeppelin related after the passing of his son, but he returns to the studio with some of his most heartfelt lyrics yet. People sometimes criticize the lack of Jimmy's input on this LP, but I think this is pretty overstated. It's documented that when the band arrived at ABBA's studio to write this album, the rest of the band was pretty on board and excited to try out these new sounds Jonesy was working with. The seventies were coming to a close and the band wasn't dwelling on their past, they were embracing a new future in musical exploration.

I've confidently called this their weakest record for some time. To me, the context of it speaks volumes. The band barely had half a month to get this entire album recorded before the Stones was taking over the studio Zeppelin was using. The result is a half baked record that has a lot of great and epic ideas, but clearly suffers from a lack of time to reflect on the material. What we have is Zeppelin's least diverse album with arguably the heaviest music of their career. It's not a bad or weak effort per se at all, just struggles to compete with Zeppelin's more competent moments imho.

I barely even have this here as it's a compilation album released to fulfill contractual obligations. Some solid tunes in here, but this isn't really a Zeppelin album.
