In Through The Out Door

Up until yesterday, I had avoided this album. I had done this based on numerous negative comments about the album and band at the time. It shows how important it is to form your own opinion and not be swayed by others. What I try not to do is compare later albums with earlier works or vice versa, this applies to all the music I listen to. So, in my opinion, this is an excellent album with great music and great production. I have bought it on vinyl and am pleased that it is still housed in the brown paper cover like the original was. The one comparison which I will make, Is that I accept that keyboards feature more on this album than previous works which I like and which suits the band development at the time.

The only Zep album not dominated by Page's compositions and playing. Plant stepped to the plate composition wise and John Paul Jones filled the production and leadership seat. Their most pop album. The guys knew they were due for a break, I do not think anybody expected the break to come in such a drastic manner. As most of you likely know, their drummer John Bonham died shortly thereafter and that was the end of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rock band ever.

When this album came out, I was in high school and was a big Zeppelin fan. The anticipation that had built up waiting for it's release was HUGE. So too, was the disappointment on first listen. And it didn't help that the radio stations played 'All of My Love' over and over ad nauseum. Zep had become a pop music band that summer. Bummer.

I put 'In Through the Out Door' away and forgot about it...until recently.

Now that I listen with fresh ears, I don't know what we were thinking back then. Either I was young and foolish, or maybe it was just inferior to all the fantastic music we were spoiled with in those golden days of rock. A fun and rocking listen in its own right and miles above the drivel that passes for music today. This is a GREAT album! (Edited)

Fool in the Rain is a fantastic song, but after the first 3 tracks this record totally loses focus. The band really fell apart here because JPJ wasn't sober any more, and he simply couldn't keep John and Jimmy sober if he wasn't himself, which led to the demise of Rock 'n' Roll's greatest band.

Much better than I remember it from my first listen. Definitely a big improvement from their previous release, Presence, which I really couldn't get into. Clearly not of the standard of their 1969-1975 albums but definitely a worthy part of their discography. Liked the introduction of keyboards to their music, can't remember them being as prominent in other albums. My favourites are In the Evening and All My Love. Carouselambra is good but way too long.
