Produced by Band Of Horses and Phil Ek. One of my favorite bands, this group can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes. Between Everything All The Time and Cease To Begin, I'm in musical heaven. This one has "The Funeral", "The Great Salt Lake", "St. Augustine"...how can you possibly go wrong? Haunting vocals, fine guitar work, great songwriting...all the things I look for in a great rock album. But Band Of Horses is more than just a rock band, and albums like Everything All The Time are more than just great. Timeless. [First added to this chart: 10/25/2012]

2006 – NETTWERK
Produced By DAVID RAWLINGS

1. Down Home Girl
2. Cocaine Habit
3. Minglewood Blues
4. My Good Gal
5. James River Blues
6. New Virginia Creeper
7. Union Maid
8. Let It Alone
9. God’s Got It
10. I Hear Them All
11. Don’t Ride That Horse
12. Bobcat Tracks

Old Crow Medicine Show is the band that brought the world “Wagon Wheel”…but you should never hold that against these guys. A string band with a rich heritage, they were discovered by Doc Watson while busking on a street in North Carolina. They play a mixture of older songs, originals, traditionals and covers. Big Iron World is their second major label release, and it’s a fine collection. This is an acoustic band, but their sound is quite full, with guitars and mandolins and bass and harmonicas and all kinds of fun bluegrassy stuff. Produced by David Rawlings (the musical partner of Gillian Welch, who plays drums on the record), this album show off their many talents quite nicely, and it’s a fine set of songs as well. It doesn’t have a massive hit like “Wagon Wheel” (from their self-titled debut), But this will satisfy quite nicely. It’s no wonder these guys are so highly thought of in country circles…this is good stuff.

Opening with the Lieber & Stoller classic “Down Home Girl”, the album hits traditional tunes like “Cocaine Habit” and “Let It Alone”. “Union Maid” is a Woody Guthrie song from 1940. Of the original songs, “James River Blues”, “My Good Gal”, and “Don’t Ride That Horse” are the standouts. These guys can really sing…each track contains rich and full harmonies. Plenty of fine bluegrass solos abound, and the album is ultimately a lot of fun. The band has remained prolific and has had a lot of success. They were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2013, and have outlived the overplay of their most famous song quite well. Any of their five studio albums are well worth having, but this one may be a hair better than the rest. Old Crow Medicine Show is a band that is always a good listen, a lot of fun, and with a dependable ear for a great song. They’re easy to get hooked on.

2006-NEW WEST
Produced By DAVID BARBE

1. Feb 14
2. Gravity's Gone
3. Easy On Yourself
4. Aftermath USA
5. Goodbye
6. Daylight
7. Wednesday
8. Little Bonnie
9. Space City
10. A Blessing And A Curse
11. A World Of Hurt

A Blessing And A Curse is the 6th studio album by the carriers of the Southern rock torch Drive By Truckers. Unlike their previous albums which were more like drunken Skynyrd parties (in the best possible way), this album shows the band moving in different directions and showing that there is a lot more to them than just Southern boogie. The Truckers have a great lineup here. Mainstay guitarists Patterson Hood (son of horn player David Hood) and Mike Cooley write and sing their own material, which results in brutally honest pictures of Southern life (Hood) and backroads Charlie Daniels like craziness (Cooley). The great weapon from this period was Jason Isbell. A great player, singer and writer himself, this was his last album with DBT...maybe because he got only 2 songs on the album. Not enough for a songwriter as prolific and rising as Isbell.

The highlights of this album are everywhere as the band continues to grow and evolve. This is a great listen all the way through, and if you're not familiar with DBT, then you're in for a treat. This is a band, by the way, that has thrived on personnel changes: this and it's predecessor The Dirty South are the only two DBT albums to this point with the same lineup. Buy this album. You'll be happy you did. By the end of "A World Of Hurt", you'll be a fan.

Produced by Jack White III & Brendan Benson. Anyone who thought that Jack White would flounder outside of The White Stripes were proven wrong with this album. "Steady As She Goes" was an immediate hit, and the rest is more than solid. The Raconteurs are sometimes referred to as a supergroup, but only White was a widely known entity beforehand. They made another, just as good album, but this is the one that really has the punch. Powerful and solid from start to finish, this shows that White just may be the great rock hope. Produced by Jim Abbiss. This is supposed to be the kind of album I don't like. But I was hooked from the first listen to "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured". The pace of this album is furious, and the energy is endless. The album is almost flawless...its flaws make it even better. In 2006, I thought music was dying. This album changed my mind about that. This album makes me want to celebrate whatever I'm doing, which, to me, is the mark of a truly successful recording. [First added to this chart: 08/22/2012]

2006 – LIBERTY & LAMENT
Produced By DAVID LOWREY

1. What Else Would You Have Me Be?
2. I Don’t Wanna Be The One
3. San Francisco
4. I Can Get Us Out Of Here Tonight
5. 1979
6. Cass

12. She Wakes When She Dreams

If you’ve ever wondered what Lucero would sound like without the country influence of their early albums…here you go. It’s their seventh album, and while it’s not bad, there seems to be something missing. Singer Ben Nichols still sounds like he’s been down that dirt road more than a couple of times. Brian Venable still tears it up on guitar. And there are some cool tracks here…”I Don’t Wanna Be The One” and “Cass” stand out well, as does “Sing Me No Hymns”. But that thing that’s missing is what made Lucero so damn charming in the first place. It’s that river of Tennessee country music influence that always ran right down the middle of their music. It’s that just right amount of twang that made Nichols’ raspy and accented vocals so perfect. The part of alt country that was country. Without it, Lucero becomes something that you never thought you’d say about them. On this album, Lucero is…ordinary.

So, one of alt-country’s best bands makes an album that is straightforward rock. Is that a bad thing? What this does is leave Lucero sounding flat, except when the songs are at their best. It makes them seem one dimensional, which is a pity because Lucero is capable of so much more. So, while the magic of their early work turns out to be in their Southern leanings, the absence of that here stands out more than anything and makes this Lucero album a disappointment. There’s enough good material here to keep this from being a total loss, but not enough to make it an overall triumph. So, stick with The Attic Tapes and Lucero and Tennessee, everything up to this. Because a Lucero album without country is kind of like beer without the alcohol…it’s not nearly as satisfying without the good stuff in it. There are many other Lucero albums that will deliver the goods, and that are a lot more fun than this one.

2006-WARNER BROS.

4. Map Of The Problematique
5. Soldier’s Poem
6. Invincible
7. Assassin
8. Exo-Politics
9. City Of Delusion

For those who love progressive rock, and albums by bands like Yes and King Crimson, fear not…you have Muse to love and obsess over. Even if you haven’t discovered them yet. But Muse is so much more than just an extension of the prog heyday of the 1970’s. This is a three piece band that sounds like a 13 piece juggernaut. This is a band that has “legendary live performances” on its resume. And this is a band that has, since 2001, unleashed five huge albums upon the world, with Black Holes And Revelations from 2006 being the peak of their career so far. They were already massive stars in the rest of the world, and had been for years, but this was the album that finally gained Muse a foothold in the United States. And for good reason. As big and on the edge of overblown as the sound of Black Holes may be, it never crosses that line, and it’s loaded with great songs. Lead everything player Matthew Bellamy is a man whose talents cannot be denied, and they are in full bloom on this album. Oh yeah…there are two other guys in the band. The rhythm section of Muse is a powerful driving force and should not be overlooked. In short, this is a great band.

Black Holes has a different sound than their previous albums, but stays true to the themes of science fiction and political corruption. “Knights Of Cydonia” was the song that gained them a foothold in America, and it’s a huge and powerful anthem. “Starlight” is not far behind, with other standouts being “Map Of The Problematique”, “Supermassive Black Hole”, and “Invincible”. There’s really not a weak track to be found here, as Bellamy and the band are in high gear throughout. As a trio of albums, you really can’t go wrong with Origin Of Symmetry, Absolution, and Black Holes And Revelations. This is big sounding, adventurous music that will sound great at high volume, and that will take you places. Enjoy them live (they have excellent DVD’s that can be easily obtained), and enjoy their studio work. Muse has since released two albums, The Resistance from 2009 and The 2nd Law from 2012. If they continue on their path, the next release would be in 2015. Something to look forward to from a band that rarely, if ever, disappoints.

2006 – FALLOUT
Produced By TONY HOFFER

1. Henrietta
2. Flathead
3. Whistle For The Choir
4. Chelsea Dagger
5. The Gutterati?
6. For The Girl
7. Doginabag
8. Creepin’ Up The Backstairs
9. Vince The Loveable Stoner
10. Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night
11. Baby Fratelli
12. Got Ma Nuts From A Hippy

If you are looking for energy…this album is for you. The Fratellis (named after the crime family in The Goonies!) roared out of Scotland with a youthful exuberance that outshined the rest of the Brit Pop bands of the time, and an ability to be oh so rock and roll. Their debut album, Costello Music, was all over their native British charts in 2006 and 2007…and almost nowhere else. It made no dents in the American charts, and that’s too bad. Costello Music is a pure burst of energy, and spawned an impressive six UK hits. This is an album from the mid 2000’s that lovers of classic rock ignored while crying that rock was dead…The Fratellis prove otherwise. This is a set of songs designed to do one thing…rock you. And it does, most effectively.

The star of this show is “Chelsea Dagger”, one of the most gleefully jumping rock songs of the last many, many years. Then imagine an album built around it, and there you go. “Henrietta”, “Baby Fratelli”, “Flathead” and “Whistle For The Choir”, along with the hidden track “Ole Black ‘N’ Blue Eyes”, make this a more than worthwhile journey. The Fratellis rock is smart, loaded with loud guitars, and it’s as British as can be. Don’t let that put you off…the UK rockers have always gotten a piece of the puzzle that we Americans seem to always miss…it’s okay to keep the music of your parents alive. This band does that. With guitars and drums and some of the catchiest hooks you’ll find. This band hasn’t done too much since…but you really should hear this high energy debut.

2006-ATO
Produced By GOMEZ & GIL NORTON

1. Notice
2. See The World
3. How We Operate
4. Hamoa Beach
5. Girlshapedlovedrug
6. Chasing Ghosts With Alcohol
7. Tear Your Love Apart
8. Charley Patton Songs
9. Woman! Man!
10. All Too Much
11. Cry On Demand
12. Don’t Make Me Laugh

The 5th album from Gomez should have made them huge in America…but it didn’t happen. Loaded with great songs and great sounds, How We Operate is stacked with should have been hits. In particular, “Girlshapedlovedrug”, “See The World”, “Woman! Man!”…all excellent. And The title track is as solid as anything the band has ever done.

Despite the successful use of tracks on TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and House, the album never caught on here, although it is the band’s most successful album in the US. This is one you should definitely check out…Gomez is a very underappreciated band in the states, and deserves a bigger audience. And How We Operate is simply a great album.

2006 – KOCH
Produced By ROBERT EARL KEEN

1. Feeling Good Again
2. Gringo Honeymoon
3. What I Really Mean
4. Shades Of Gray
5. Amarillo Highway
6. Merry Christmas From The Family
7. Corpus Cristi Baby
8. Furnace Fan
9. Broken End Of Love
10. Long Chain
11. Train Trek
12. I’m Comin’ Home
13. The Road Goes On Forever
14. Farm Fresh Onions

Country music is not dead. Not as long as there are songwriters like Robert Earl Keen protecting the integrity of what this music should always be. But Keen is not just a songwriter…he’s also a great performer, and there’s no place better to hear this than on Live At The Ryman. Not only is Keen in the finest of form here, but his band is off the charts. The subtitle “The Greatest Show Ever Been Gave” is not far off…these guys simply tear it up through a great set of Keen’s best. Things get off to a mellow enough start with the excellent “Feeling Good Again” and “Gringo Honeymoon”, but by the end of the classic “Shades Of Gray”, Keen’s band is a wrecking crew. “Merry Christmas From The Family” elicits the best kind of audience participation…when you have the crowd screaming “tampons and Salem Lights”, you’re really in the zone you want to be in. Just the best kind of fun.

The second half gives you the back to back excellence of “Furnace Fan” and “Corpus Cristi Bay”, and by the end of “I’m Coming Home”, the crowd is chanting the artist’s name for an encore. Mr. Keen does not disappoint…the eleven minute burner “The Road Goes On Forever” is just perfect, and the finale, a romping version of “Farm Fresh Onions”, leaves you wanting more and more and more. If you’ve had it with the current state of mainstream country, then you should visit this classic live album. Robert Earl Keen is one of the brightest lights in country, has been for years, and a performance like this could definitely serve the rest of Nashville well…quit trying to be the Eagles, quit singing the same damn song over and over again, and put your twang to some good use. Robert Earl Keen does, and this, one of the great live albums of its time, should stand as a lesson on how this needs to get done…all heart, all soul, all out music.
