Top 38 Music Albums of 1999 by mrmcrook

A semi decent year. List of two halves. Top half definitely superior to those in the back half. Back half hard to place in any definitive order. Greatest hits, compilations, soundtracks etc all ranked after studio albums as it's only fair in a year list

A magnum opus. This album is full of perfectly constructed tracks which segue brilliantly into each other. A masterpiece in it's own right. 01/23 [First added to this chart: 10/10/2020]

Saw Shihad for the first time as support for Motorhead during the 1916 tour. That was long before this. But I knew from seeing them they'd do well. And this is there pinnacle. All hail Shihad. Shihad's magnum opus. Best they've made. Best metal/hard rock album to come out of NZ. A bit top heavy, second half leveling off a bit but overall this is a fantastic album. If you like metal, get it. You wont be disappointed 01/24 [First added to this chart: 10/10/2020]

Discovered Beth Orton at 'The Big Day Out' playing mid afternoon on the secondary stage. I was lying on the grass having something to eat before indulging on the bourbon and mind altering substances I had to see me through the evening and night. I knew none of her music. But it was so hypnotic and serene. It fit the mood so perfectly and she has the most beautiful voice. I was hooked. When something sounds that good before you've taken your drugs, you know your onto a great thing. Queen of alt folk. [First added to this chart: 10/10/2020]

This is the where they started to expand their sound and style and it upped their game in my opinion. There were the bangers, but many tracks also oozing a hypnotic serenity. It was from this album they became the undisputed kings of electronic music 02/25 [First added to this chart: 10/10/2020]

Driving rhythms right through. I don't like putting music into sub-genres but if we're going to lump this into the nu-metal category it ranks as one of the superior albums of that genre. One flaw is that it does have a very similar feel throughout but finishes with a nice change of pace with 'December'. Very under rated and deserves more credit than it's ever had. 02/22 [First added to this chart: 10/10/2020]

From their golden era. Lot of their best songs on this. Even the songs that weren't commercially pushed have that classic Chili's sound. That's what makes this one of their better albums. But like most Chili albums, too long, they should of cut out about 4 tracks. Then they'd have had an absolute classic. 04/24 [First added to this chart: 11/28/2023]

Even though they were still very young, they'd progressed, broadened and matured quite noticeably. Well done to them. They'd expanded the tunes with more complex arrangements and bought in more instruments for a bigger sound. It's very melodic metal due to the vocals. It's a really good album. 02/25 [First added to this chart: 02/22/2025]

Say what you will about Limp Bizkit, they've got some grunt behind a lot of their tunes. One of the better Nu-Metal albums out there. The last 4 or 5 tracks could've been cut which would of improved it as a whole. 06/23 [First added to this chart: 10/10/2020]

This is the 5th I've got from these guys. Bit heavier than some of their later ones where they went into a bit of an ambient metal soundscape mode. Prog metal's always interesting.  Most songs don't seem to have a definitive start or end.  They just all flow into each other. This is still a bit soundscape-y as most songs segue nicely.  It's one of the better ones from them.    02/25   [First added to this chart: 02/24/2024]
