Not a fashionable choice, but the wings are stretching towards the flights of fancy, and the quality of songwriting is absolutely top notch. Their only perfect album.

So long then. A beguiling glimpse of what 70s Beatles would have sounded like. Come Together sets the tone, heavier and darker but the songwriting still has the wow factor.

The album starts as well as an album can. Can they keep it going? Not quite. It dips a bit on side 2 before the immense Day In The Life.

It’s brilliant. So many ideas and 14 songs squeezed into a standard running time. Sometimes I think the running order is askew. Or maybe it’s just not possible to find an overarching theme. Sounds more like a good bands greatest hits than an important album by a great band.

Double albums tend to be a mixed bag and this is no exception. It struggles to gain traction throughout as greats like I’m So Tired and Blackbird get followed by Piggies. It always strikes me as a missed opportunity, what an album it could have been!

This is not allowed because it’s a compilation. While we’re on the subject how great are the blue and red doubles? I did want to mention this one though because it’s easy to be precious with great art, but it is a worthy and brave reimagining which can shed some new light and cast some new shadows.
