Released in Feb 78, to universal bafflement and some acclaim. The story of the choice of Wuthering Heights as the first single is well documented. It launched the albums success and went on to sell over a million copies.

Kate sings in her high register and the album is so brutally honest it is an uncomfortable listen in places. The title track itself is enormously unsettling, but brilliant.

Lionheart and Kick Inside form an album pairing, released just 9 months apart. Kate has certainly matured though and the album is a little more comfortable and forms a more rounded whole than the higher rated Kick Inside.

The album’s release was certainly rushed. The brutal truth is EMI didn’t know what they had and were trying to cash in on their ‘novelty act’. Rushing a release was a mistake never to be repeated and total control of her output was a keystone of her career from here.

If Kick Inside and Lionheart are best viewed as a pair, Never For Ever is a bridge to the second stage of Kate’s musical journey. As the cover testifies, Kate is full of ideas and the album is much more diverse than the early pair.

Army Dreamers could be early Kate, but Babooshka and Breathing are a world away. Nearly two years have gone by since Lionheart and Kate is still developing quickly.

Delius is also noteworthy. It just sounds like nothing else.

Here we go. Hounds Of Love and The Dreaming are the first albums produced entirely by Kate and are widely (and rightly) regarded as her best work.

Unstintingly independent, experimental and commercially suicidal tracks bookend the album, but side 2 particularly contains some of her greatest work. Great cover too.

An album in 2 parts, Hounds Of Love contains the bangers. Never, and I mean never has such experimental music been so consistently brilliant as here.

The commercial stuff out of the way, The Ninth Wave is a suite of music about a person trapped in water overnight. Kate’s dreamy start then takes you in deep and dark until the sweet release of Morning Fog. Hello Earth particularly is a masterpiece.

A line is now drawn and Kate releases Experiment iv and The Whole Story compilation.

Whilst it makes sense to see The Dreaming And Hounds as her second pair of albums Kate now has the biggest gap to date - over 4 years - before the release of Sensual World.

The new sound is often provided by the Trio Bulgaria. Kate hits the heights sporadically here. Rockets Tail and This Woman’s work finish the album strongly but the overall effect is more interesting than magical.

The now traditional 4 year wait rewarded fans with The Red Shoes.

Although the album has its moments, it always feels a little disjointed. Kate was undergoing massive upheaval in her personal life in terms of the break with long term partner Del Palmer (the musical collaboration continued) and a number of bereavements, and this comes across in the music.

The least satisfying of her studio albums.

After the longest wait yet, Kate returned to the formula of Hounds of Love. Bangers on side one A Sea of Honey with a more experimental suite on side 2 A Sky of Honey.

The album rewards repeated listens and has great depth, side 2 being particularly rewarding.

A couple of listens in and I considered this to be her 3rd masterpiece. Time has shown me that might be a little strong, but it is a great album nonetheless. Wildman in particular is a snow covered peak amongst a high quality range. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
