Kate sings in her high register and the album is so brutally honest it is an uncomfortable listen in places. The title track itself is enormously unsettling, but brilliant. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
The album’s release was certainly rushed. The brutal truth is EMI didn’t know what they had and were trying to cash in on their ‘novelty act’. Rushing a release was a mistake never to be repeated and total control of her output was a keystone of her career from here. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
Army Dreamers could be early Kate, but Babooshka and Breathing are a world away. Nearly two years have gone by since Lionheart and Kate is still developing quickly.
Delius is also noteworthy. It just sounds like nothing else. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
Unstintingly independent, experimental and commercially suicidal tracks bookend the album, but side 2 particularly contains some of her greatest work. Great cover too. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
The commercial stuff out of the way, The Ninth Wave is a suite of music about a person trapped in water overnight. Kate’s dreamy start then takes you in deep and dark until the sweet release of Morning Fog. Hello Earth particularly is a masterpiece.
A line is now drawn and Kate releases Experiment iv and The Whole Story compilation. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
The new sound is often provided by the Trio Bulgaria. Kate hits the heights sporadically here. Rockets Tail and This Woman’s work finish the album strongly but the overall effect is more interesting than magical. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
Although the album has its moments, it always feels a little disjointed. Kate was undergoing massive upheaval in her personal life in terms of the break with long term partner Del Palmer (the musical collaboration continued) and a number of bereavements, and this comes across in the music.
The least satisfying of her studio albums. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
The album rewards repeated listens and has great depth, side 2 being particularly rewarding. [First added to this chart: 05/03/2023]
