Xiu Xiu (XMFX - USA - Jan 26) – Xiu Mutha Fuckin’ Xiu: Vol. 1
16.01.26
This is Xiu Xiu having fun in public and somehow not ruining it, which already feels like a minor miracle. Instead of treating these songs like museum pieces or cheap shock vehicles, they handle them like half-remembered nightmares you can’t quite shake the next morning, bending familiar melodies until they feel bruised but still recognisable. The arrangements are stripped, warped and occasionally tender, with Jamie Stewart sounding less like he’s exorcising demons and more like he’s quietly befriended them. What really works is the balance: the band resist the urge to completely dismantle the originals, letting the emotional spine of each track survive while smuggling in their usual unease through texture, pacing and tone. It’s reverent without being polite, strange without being obnoxious, and oddly moving in places you don’t expect. For a covers record, it feels unusually personal, like a mixtape made by someone who loves these songs enough to risk embarrassing himself in front of them.

Renatto Olivares (AR - CHL - Jan 26) - Aguas Raras
09.01.26
Fussless. It unfolds slowly, the kind of album you half-notice at first, then realise you’ve been paying attention the whole time — usually around the moment you accept you’ve lost your passport somewhere in the parque and there’s no point panicking. Olivares sits in that uneasy space between post-punk tension and loose, jazz-tinged wandering, where things feel slightly off but never messy. There are moments that echo the colder edges of Bauhaus, and others that drift in a way fans of Black Country, New Road will recognise, though it never feels like it’s trying to join that conversation too loudly. The jazz touches are subtle, more about mood than solos, nudging tracks sideways rather than showing off. It’s thoughtful, slightly unsettled, and modestly confident — an album that doesn’t demand praise, but earns it by being patient and well put together.

Richard Sallis (Casino - AUS - Jan 26) - Casino
02.01.2026
Matures on Jan 2025's 'Felix', although Sallis is still at his best in late album tracks such as 'Mandolin Gun' and 'Contact Hours' when the pain is guttural, tactile and smothered in doomscrolling Sunday night horror.
Closer 'Yesteryear' is a softer triumph with hints of 'Eternal Sunshine of a Trumpless Mind'.

Mon Rovîa (Bloodline - LBR (Liberia) - Jan 26) - Bloodline
09.01.2026
A whimsical study in restrained chaos, where moments of melodic clarity — particularly in 'Somewhere down in Georgia' and 'Where the mountain meets the sea' — emerge like rare, hopeful breath vapour in a chilly jaundiced January morning sky. The title track and 'Field Song' showcase deft control of tension, balancing intricate instrumentation with vocals that somehow manage to be both precise and slightly off-kilter. 'Black Cauldron', meanwhile, might convince you that perfection has been attained—until the next track politely reminds you that life, like Mon Rovîa and the country it hails from, has endured the hardships of the Liberian civil war. Overall, it’s an album that rewards attention without ever letting itself be pinned down. Might need multiple listens to fully appreciate the clever little musical winks hidden throughout. Weah to go!
