Micah finally conveys the synthesis of good R&B that has been the hidden premise of hypnagogic pop's attraction. Making the two vibes more obvious than ever, he accidentally crafts legitimately cool, DIY-esque soundscapes whilst never shy to say where the mainstream influence is from. After the driving two tracks, sounding catchy with awesome percussive rhythm (if Charlie Megira was alive today basically), Freaks is the first throwback retro-pop song in years I have actually dug. Knowing the background and feeling the lushness underneath, it's much more contagious than the sellouts on Billboard. Micah also feature bitpop elements (with rapper Headband Henny) on One On One, on one of the greatest hypnagogic pop rap one could ask for: the synths make it that too. Those alternative floating synths alongside the innocent delivery on I Love You Like I Love A Pop Song also show charm to me. The track with the best riff is Why Do You Take Me So Serious because of its hidden Cure worship (and the vocal melody derivative of Kate Bush), and the realest track being Midnight Walker in the influence of familial melodiousness and low fidelity cuteness. It's also cute when On. uses fuzz and amateurish pop-mixing to its advantage, creating a semi-trance, especially with that white noise, that is hard to pinpoint. And Self-destructive, well I don't know it can be that disjointed with its instrumentation and still work the way many other lames could mostly just hope for.
Not every cut is hitting: Paranoid have a syncopation doesn't go for any sweet spots (despite it still being a fine joint). The uncommon combination of internet drum-boosted pop and XXXTentacion-styled simplicity on Lust has the perfect length, even if the gutpunch is non-existent. And despite Freaks being great, Crush. leans more to the yuppie-side of 80s pop-funk, which I dislike. That being stated, Micah should be listened to.
It also truly helps how the record only is half an hour in length. Super duper easy to digest, and a cute little ride of an album. [First added to this chart: 12/21/2024]
