This album, other than the actual opener, Not In An Anthropological Mood, starts off super duper strong. First Notebook of Songs (a smooth progressive piece that contains Tangerine Dream-isms, and a variety of vocal expression from Ganavya, even if not all of it is peak), Forgive Me My (possibly the most delightful minutes of new age, especially with the spontaneous harp), Seal (three minutes of just headspinning jazz synth and reversed flute), El Kebda Let It Go (the most preternatural cut here). Damn. That run from 2-5 alone makes it the year's most remarkable Spiritual Jazz disc.
But we're only halfway through, cause Call It Luck If You Want To sprinkles melancholia into the soul and I Walk Again gets a bit rhythmic. Our Mother Is Our Daughter Is Our Mother's painstaking detail to synthy spores of warmth and hypnotic guitar pattern might just make anybody go insane - yet not cause it's so peaceful. Quite difficult not to worship a 4 minute piece song like that one, just wished it was 2 minutes longer.
I don't care if not every last song is great, the level of quality coming through the speakers speaks for itself. [First added to this chart: 01/10/2025]
