Bioalkemisti was intriguing but I couldn't take it seriously, some of the combos were moist.
The title track not only is very cool but even more intriguing, way more. In the song, electronic syncopation with live drums and cryptic vocals take this song to a higher plane of avant-garde metal, especially when the break-out contains synths of moody pushback.
Voitelu is such a wonderful mixture of industrial metal's pacing and psychedelic rock's idiosyncratic chaos. This could've so easily gone to shambles, but Oranssi Pazuzu got skill to have a balance I would call a rarity of chef's kiss...even the piano during the middle of this storm was epic.
If Radiohead went faux-scary and half-metal, they would make songs like Hautatuuli, except the vocals. I mean it just sounds like a chamber renewal of All I Need (from In Rainbows).
The first one and a half minute of Valotus is almost the musical equivalent to a panic attack, and then it breaks into what sounds like a bad trip on the wrong edge of town. OP is making black metal a more dominant expression rather than a mythically entrancing wall of guitar. Around the four-minute mark, the distinct piano comes back in, even cuts out the rest of instruments, to sprinkle ice onto the landscape of unabashed dirt...before the music lays more sonic dirt with deafening feedback afterward. It's crushing, just like the last 16 seconds of high frequency, making another highlight.
Though the ten-minute Ikikäärme starts with solo piano, it builds up with a consistent drum loop, leaning synth sound, and then anthemic guitar sphere. When the break-out comes around 4:33, it feels not as original or advanced as prior tracks, though not mediocre. Outro was also underwhelming sadly.
The last track, Vierivä usva, is instrumental soundscape, another sort of black metal blend but with flagments of space rock. It sounds like something out of a space opera movie, though better than a lot of what I've heard of said material. Fine ending, but there were better cuts before.
Even when I don't fully enjoy every segment of Muuntautuja, I gotta give 'em props: album's distinctive and does a blend where most bands ends up sounding flat, try-hard or unintentionally funny. Noteworthy metal in 2024. [First added to this chart: 12/21/2024]
